Kuala Lumpur is a wonderful city that can truly be described as a melting pot. The mixture of Malay, Indian and Chinese inhabitants have helped to shape this vibrant, modern city.

The iconic Petronas Towers are a pulling point for many travelers and they really are pretty impressive. Up until 1998, these towers were the tallest building in the world and this is definitely something that the Malaysian people are proud of. Although it isn’t possible to go right to the top, you can buy a ticket for the observation bridge which connects the two towers. Make sure you get there early as you will need to queue up in order to get one of the limited places in the lift. At the foot of the towers there is a big shopping center with designer boutiques, restaurants and a museum about petroleum (Petronas is a petroleum company). It also has a food hall which serves a huge array of different cuisines, from traditional Malay curry, to Korean cuisine, to MacDonald’s! Another great attraction is China Town. This bustling area in central Kuala Lumpur is definitely the place to go if you are after a bargain. The night market on Petaling Street is brimming with stalls and shops where you can practice your skills in haggling with vendors offering everything from knock-off designer watches to herbal remedies for impotence. It’s also a great place to sample the local fruit produce and the cheap food stalls here are a great hit with travelers and locals alike.

If you feel like going on an adventure out of the centre of Kuala Lumpur, you can hop on a local bus bound for the Batu Caves. Located up an impressive 272 steps, the Bau Caves are a magnificent series of caves formed out of limestone 400 million years ago. The main temple cave has a 300ft high ceiling and is filled with religious sculptures, along with a scary looking snake for you to pose for a photo with! At the foot of the steps there are a handful of souvenir shops and great cafes where you can tuck into a tasty curry before catching a bus back to central Kuala Lumpur.

This south east Asian country is spread across two land masses with Malaysia being located below Thailand on the Asian peninsula and eastern Malaysia being part of the country of Borneo. The largest city in East Malaysia is Kota Kinabalu.

Malaysia has a tropical climate and east Malaysia experiences heavy monsoon rains between November and February. On peninsular Malaysia the monsoon months vary depending on whether you are on the east or the west coast. Although it can get quite humid the weather in Malaysia is often pleasant and not too hot.

Arriving into Malaysia most people will arrive at the Sungai Besi international airport in Kuala Lumpur which has flights to and from a number of world wide destinations.

Car hire Malaysia is a good way to not only explore large cities such as the capital Kuala Lumpur, but also to get out into the beautiful Malaysian countryside.

One such place is the Cameron Highlands which is almost 2,000 metres above sea level in the Green Bowl of Malaysia, an area which provides a lot of food to the rest of the country. Here you can see some of the classic sites of rural Malaysia such as tea plantations, strawberry farms and butterfly farms.

Another must see area of outstanding natural beauty is Miri and this resort city in Sarawak is considered to be the gateway to the UNESCO world heritage site of Gunung Mulu National Park.

Travellers in Malaysia can also island hop to stunning locations such as Pangkor Island which has great beaches and beautiful blue waters. The beaches here are so good that one has been called Pantai Puteri Dewi which means beach of the Lovely Princess.

Pangkor town is a quaint settlement based around fishing and consequently a great place to try some wonderful Malaysian fish dishes such as Malaysian fish curry.

The archipelago of 100 or so Langkawi islands is also incredible, being made up of mangrove estuaries, mountains, rainforests and of course beaches to die for. Because Langkawi is a duty free port, many people come here to shop and shopping is certainly one of the main pastimes in Malaysia.

Car hire Kuala Lumpur is the quickest and cheapest way to travel to the track and see the race. Malaysia is a diverse country that is something of a melting pot of cultures – you can be sure of experiencing something new and exciting at every corner as a result.

The nation is a particularly popular destination for this reason, attracting holidaymakers at all times of the year.

With the Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix coming up next month, now may be the ideal time to begin planning a spring holiday to the country.

Taking place at the 5.542 km Sepang Circuit in Selangor, the event is sure to be an exciting one as the world’s best Formula One drivers take to the track in a bid to gain pole position.

Visiting Malaysia for the race will also mean that holidaymakers have the opportunity to explore the many attractions situated within Selangor and beyond.

Some of the top sights in the state include the national zoo and Selangor Tropical Fruits Garden.

Travellers should also take the time to see the Blue Mosque, which harbours the world’s tallest minarets, along with the popular Batu Caves.

Carey Island, the Royal Gallery and the High 5 Bread Town Museum – which has the unique distinction of being Malaysia’s first bread museum – are also fantastic places to visit.

Of course, there’s much more to see and do outside of Selangor, so if you get the chance to spend a few days in another part of the country, it is certainly worth taking it.

Kuala Lumpur and its fusion of old and new architecture and many different cultures is truly a spectacle to behold and could be the ideal city break destination.

For those interested in architecture, the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque in Johor and St Paul’s Hill in Melaka – which is home to the remains of a Portuguese fort and St Paul’s Church – are just two of the places you could visit to make the most of your Malaysia holiday.

All in all, a trip to Malaysia to witness the Grand Prix could well become the holiday of a lifetime for those lucky enough to be able to travel around the country and experience its unique culture.
